I thought that this reading was very interesting and also very strange. The story talked about the origin of sexual lust and I found that interesting. I wonder if this big flood that occurred in the fourth world can be connected to the flood in the Bible. I also wondered if the old man in the story who had a grey beard was referring to Noah. These stories are very delightful to read because they explain how things came to be, for example the reason we have pubic hair was because of the coyote. In the text it said that the pubic hair made the penis and vagina more attractive. I would disagree with this. lol.
It seemed to me that the women needed the men more than the men needed the women. The women missed the men so much that they tried crossing the river and drowned in the process. The men did not attempt to go across the river. I do realize that lust was not the only reason for crossing the river, the women also needed food. This makes the women seem more dependent on men.
Where is love in this story? Is sex their only reason for them wanting one another?
Saying that the penis and vagina shout for each other is a good way of describing sexual lust.
This was an interesting passage and your take on it is similar to mine. But one thing that I think could be seen in a different way is how the women were more dependent than the men. After all the men eventually were the ones who yelled to the women to see if they wanted to reunite. Also, the men were getting pretty desperate to find ways to pleasure themselves... I for one was glad the men and women came together.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I wasn't sure what the meaning behind the women being more dependent on the men for sexual desire, comfort and food was. As I was reading it I expected both to want/need each other. I really want to know why the women had to be more dependent on the men.
ReplyDeleteEmergence hints that the women weren't faring as well as the men because the men took all of the technology that the hermaphroditic twins made with them. It was because the women were unable to tend to the land properly that their crops began to fail. Otherwise, I feel like the women would have fared equally as well as the men.
ReplyDeleteIn response to your question, I feel that sex is the reason why men want women and vice versa, but love is what makes them monogamous and prevents them from committing adultery.
I felt like the men needed the women as well. For example, the one that tried to have sexual intercourse with the liver shows that men needed women as well. Also, the men did take the hermaphrodite twins, which gave them the advantage in survival because the hermaphrodite twins were the ones with the tools. I think it's just the translation that made it sound like women needed men more than men needed the women. However, I do agree with you about the love part; I didn't see any love in the story either. It sounded like the men and women seemed to only want to be sexually satisfied.
